Introduction

I gather and use certain information about individuals in order to provide products, special offers and competitions in a timely fashion, and to enable certain functions on this website. Namely:

  • Email addresses for inclusion in the NIck Crutchley Blog, operated by Google.
  • What links you have clicked to reach this website to ascertain the efficacy of promotions.  For this, Google Analytics is used.  Pinterest and Amazon also monitors traffic and collects data from this site.
  • Outgoing links to Amazon stores are monitored by SmartURL. This data is used to determine how effective the website is when directing traffic to Amazon sites worldwide and other sites.

What data I gather

I may collect the following information
  • Email address (Collected by Gleam.io but accessible by myself).
  • Twitter handles by those who enter prize draws.
  • Question data collected through prize draws.
  • Website usage data
  • Any review you send for inclusion on the site, with permission granted for its use.

How I use this data

Collecting this data helps me understand what you are looking from me as an author, enabling me to write better novels and short stories, and provide a better shopping experience. So, in essence, to make an income that allows me to continue to write.

Specifically, I will use data to
  • Send the blog newsletter
  • Assess which social share buttons are most popular
  • Assess which store link is most popular

Controlling Information About You

Unsubscribing from Blog Newsletter removes your details from the database I store in an encrypted form.  Emails given for prize draws stored on Gleam Data base are also deleted.  Any emails stored on Google's feedburner is also deleted.

Security

Your email address is either securely stored on feedburner.google.com servers, gleam.io servers, or stored in a key-encrypted file.  A back up of the mailing list is kept in a key-encrypted file on a secure Microsoft server.  The passwords to these sites are encrypted by LastPass.

Data is retrieved from these sites infrequently to inform those who have failed to verify their subscription.  Unverified email addresses are deleted after a courtesy newsletter is sent, and the recipient fails to verify their subscription.

The above procedure are in line with the Data Protection Act 1998.

Cookies used on this Site

This website uses cookies, as almost all websites do. Cookies are small text files that are placed on your computer or mobile phone when you browse websites.  Cookies on this site have little impact on the functionality of this site, and are used principally to monitor where visitors come from.  For example, if you clicked a Facebook post and landed on this site, it would be recorded, though your personal details would not.
Cookies on this site do not collect any personally identifiable information or sensitive information without your express permission.  Neither does it pass personally identifiable data to third parties.

Website Users Granting Permission for this site to Use Cookies

If the settings on your software that you are using to view this website (your browser) are adjusted to accept cookies, I
take this, and your continued use of this website, to mean that you accept the use of cookies used. Should you wish to remove or not use cookies from this site you can learn how to do this below.  The site will continue to provide the same service.  The only impact of removing cookies is on the following:

Visitor Statistics Cookies
Google, and Weebly (the company used to build this site) and Nick Crutchley (via Smarturl.it), use cookies to compile visitor statistics such as how many people have visited various pages, how long they stayed there, and whether they visited using a smartphone, PC, etc.  This potentially helps me to continuously improve the site and calculate how to promote novels and short stories on external sites such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest and Review Sites, in the most cost-effective way.

Visitor Statistics may be used by Google, Amazon, and other organisaitons to paint a portrait of you as a consumer. This helps them advertise products that are likely to be of interest to you as you surf the internet.  With cookies enabled,  social networks, online retail outlets, and advertisers use and share data to match products to your consumer profile.  So if you have ever entered your age, interests, income, and other details, there is a potential that businesses and their affiliates are better able to persuade you to purchase goods that may not be nescessary for your happiness and well-being.

Affiliate Cookies
The links to Amazon.com, Amazon.ca and Amazon.co.uk are email based, and once you arrive on Amazon, Amazon places a cookie
to tell Amazon that this this website directed you to it to purchase an ebook or paperback.  I earn a commission from the sale of Novels and Short Stories on Amazon that have been directed from this site, together with other products purchased in the same order.  It is about 5% of the basket sale.  I receive such orders as Amazon Gift Certificates, and give them as prizes in competitions run on other sites.

I cannot identify you you personally, though I suspect, if you are an Amazon Customer, Amazon can.  Please feel free to turn off all cookies.  I would rather you feel secure while on this site than my earning extra funds from the sale of my works. However, this may impede your enjoyment of the rest of the internet due to the ubiquity of cookies.

Turning Cookies Off
You can usually switch cookies off by adjusting your browser settings to stop it from accepting cookies.
Doing so will have no impact on the enjoyment or utility of this site, but will likely limit the functionality of a large proportion of the world's websites. Cookies are ubiquitous.  My advice is have antivirus and antimalware products protecting you while surfing the internet, and use Web Of Trust or other services to help guide where you click. Use encrypted passwords and never share your passwords, even for Social Networks, with anyone.
